Kenneth "Ken" W. Alphin, age 85, of Smyrna, Georgia, has joined his wife of 55 years, Ruby Sandlin Alphin, and son Kenneth Alphin, Jr., to be with the Lord on December 18, 2013.

He was born to William Ransom Alphin and Katie Huffman Alphin on February 2, 1928 in LaGrange, North Carolina. One of nine children, Ken joined the U.S. Merchant Marines at the age of 15 to help support his family during the great depression. He enjoyed serving his country and being close to the water that he later joined the U.S. Navy and fought during WWII.

He was an active member of Hurt Road Baptist Church for many years. He had served as past financial advisor for the church and considered his Sunday School Class, the "Brotherhood," to be a very important part of his life.

Ken was very active in helping those less fortunate. He loved animals, children, and had even taken on an adopted child through the World Organization Program for third world children. His late wife, Ruby, also donated her time and efforts to the Salvation Army. A self made man, Ken read every book in the world that he could lay his hands upon. He had started his own jewelry business, Alphin Wholesale on Bankhead Highway in Mableton.

Kenneth "Ken" Wayne Alphin is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Ruby Sandlin Alphin and son, Kenneth Wayne Alphin Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Debbie and her husband Walter Cobb of Greenville, North Carolina, Sharon Croft of Smyrna, Connie and her husband John Thompson of Douglasville, Karen A. Biddy of Smyrna, and Kathy and her husband Ricky McKinney of Mableton; grandchildren, Danny, Julie and her husband Jason, Emily and her husband Mike, Tracey and her husband Wayne, Misty and her husband Scott, and TJon and his wife Jennifer; brothers, Al Alphin of Atlanta and Ray Suggs and his wife Nancy of Morehead City, North Carolina; sister, Betty A. Jones of Rome; and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held in the chapel of Hurt Road Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Parker officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Harmony Memorial Gardens in Mableton with Kenneth's grandsons and great-grandsons serving as pallbearers and his Sunday School class serving as honorary pallbearers.

Flowers are appreciated or donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
