OBITUARY

A Mass for Carmine C. Alfano, 87, of Roselle, who dressed in black tie for his daily goodwill visits to patients at Union Hospital, will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Church of St. Joseph the Carpenter, Roselle, after the funeral from the Sullivan Funeral Home, 146 E. Second Ave., Roselle.

Mr. Alfano, who died Tuesday in Union Hospital, was a truck driver for the Frank Alfano Disposal Co. in Elizabeth for 30 years before retiring in 1981.

After his retirement, Mr. Alfano worked in the cafeteria of Union Hospital for 14 years.

He was later appointed as the hospital's goodwill ambassador, a staff position created especially for him, which he held for six years, until the week of his death. As ambassador, Mr. Alfano dressed in a tuxedo and made his daily rounds of the hospital, visiting patients and fielding requests as a food service representative.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the European Theater.

A life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3946, Roselle, Mr. Alfano received the Thomas McDevitt Award from the council as an outstanding lay person of Union County.

Born in Linden, Mr. Alfano lived in Elizabeth before moving to Roselle 45 years ago.

Surviving are a son, Daniel; daughters, Eileen Rosenwald and Annette; sisters, Angela Imbriaco, Frances Niemczyk and Dolores Savage; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
