STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Former Staten Islander Michael Abagnalo, 88, of Plainfield, N.J., a retired city worker, died Wednesday at the Woodlands Nursing Home, Plainfield.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Abagnalo lived in Bulls Head before settling in Plainfield.
Mr. Abagnalo worked as a clerk for the New York City Transit Authority for 16 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and enjoyed ballroom dance music and playing lottery games.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the European theater.
He was a former parishioner of St. Roch's R.C. Church, Port Richmond.
His wife of 62 years, the former Nora Nelson, died last year.
"His dedication to my mother was unwavering," said his son, Michael. "Knowing that he is with her again makes it a little easier not having him here."
In addition to his son, Michael, surviving are his daughter, Amelia Galenti; two brothers, Anthony and John; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Roch's Church. Burial will follow in Woodbridge (N.J.) Memorial Gardens.
