Harry Joshua Edwards

Robbinsville - Harry Joshua Edwards, 77, of Atoah community of Robbinsville, passed from this life on Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, to be with the loved ones who had passed before him.

Harry was born in Calderwood, Tenn., on Aug. 3, 1928. He was the second son born of eight children to the late Clyde Jackson Edwards and Daisy Massey Edwards. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Maurice Vaughn Edwards; sister, Maxine Edwards Hyde-Greene; and an unnamed infant sister.

When Harry was 12 months old he contracted spinal meningitis, a disease that eventually took away Harry's ability to hear and learn to speak. In 1935, Harry was enrolled in North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton. As a teenager in NCSD, Harry played a right guard on the school's football team. After he left NCSD he attended a trade school in Clarksville, Ga., where he was taught to be a machinist.

Harry came back to Graham County and faced the difficulties of finding employment due to his inability to speak and hear. In 1966, he gained employment with the United States Forest Service where he went to work in the machine shop. He later became a cartographic technician, drawing topographic maps in the USFS regional office in Atlanta.

He retired from the Forest Service after 25 years of service. He received several performance awards during this time, including the United States Department of Agriculture Award for Outstanding Employees with Disabilities and the President's Award for Outstanding Federal Employees with Disabilities, presented in Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his brothers, Paul Edwards, Marvin "Tumpy" Edwards and wife, Annette, Doug Edwards and wife, Linda, all of Robbinsville; sister and her husband, Roma and Max Buchanan of Pensacola, Fla.; aunts, Marie Hampton and Mildred McClincy, both of Robbinsville; four nephews, three nieces, 11 great-nephews, 3 great-nieces and two great-great-nieces.

The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church. The Revs. Daniel Stewart and Tommy Hooper will officiate. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the church.

A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Massey Cemetery.
