Hildred Oree Golden went to be with his Lord and Savior on Feb. 4, 2007. Born in Sea Level, N.C., Jan. 3, 1923, he was the youngest son of the late George and Caddie Taylor Golden. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Coast Guard. On June 6, 1943, he married Grace Twiford of Stumpy Point. He moved to Stumpy Point after World War II and became a commercial fisherman from which he retired at the age of 81. Mr. Golden was a founding member and served in every capacity of the Stumpy Point Men's Club which evolved into the Stumpy Point Civic Association. He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the board and as a trustee for many years. He was also a member of the Oregon Inlet Users Association and the Oregon Inlet Waterways Commission for many years. He tried for many years to preserve and improve the fishing grounds for the commercial as well as the recreational fisherman. He fought and won the battle to keep peat mining out of northeastern North Carolina. He also built many of his own boats and helped many to repair or improve theirs. Mr. Golden was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, his parents and three sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila Golden of the residence; his brother, Robert Golden of Atlantic, N.C.; his nieces, Faye O'Neal of Manteo, N.C., Judy Gillikin of Bettie, N.C., Shirley Fuchs of Sea Level and Myra Lewis of Beaufort, N.C.; his nephews, Sammy and Danny Taylor of Sea Level, George Golden of Hampton, Va., and Dallas Willis of Sea Level. He also left many of his extended family and close friends who will miss his wisdom, friendship and advice. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tom Jennings, the Rev. Ronnie Midgett and the Rev. Sue Farlow. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and at other times at the residence.
