British Royalty. Born Charlotte Augusta, the only child of the loveless marriage between the Prince of Wales (later George IV) and Caroline of Brunswick. Her young life was filled with the disrespect her parents held for each other, and they constantly quarreled. As a result she grew up very rebellious, and didn‘t have good manners. At an early point in her life her father separated her from her mother and she grew up under his influence, and that of her uncles. Her rebellious nature did not stop her from falling in love, and she was rumored to have a few clandestine affairs. In her sixteenth year, the government proposed a marriage to Prince William of Orange, but she quickly broke it off when she saw the King of Prussia's 19 year old Nephew, Prince Fredrick. He too, soon fell out of favor. Finally, on May 2nd, 1816, she married Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg at Carlton House after a three month courtship. They were as different as night and day, his cold and formal attitude to her passionate and rebellious one. It made for a happy marriage, and they were popular in London . In early 1817, after a few miscarriages, she finally seemed to be carrying a child to term. The country rejoiced in the pregnancy, however her physicians began to restrict her every movement. At Claremont House on November 5th , after some 50 hours of labor, a still-born son was born. After receiving bad medical treatment, she died of post-partum hemorrhaging at the young age of 21 on November 6th. She is buried with her son at her feet. Prince Leopold and the rest of the country went mad with grief at her passing. Not until the death of Princess Diana has the country shown such public mourning. Because of her death, the not yet born Victoria would become queen in 1837.
