BASIC INFO: Louis James Balbach (1896-1942) was born in San Jose, California, the youngest of three children of Louis Augustus Balbach (1868-1908) and his wife Nettie Viola (Bonar) Balbach (1873-1959). Louis was a star swimmer and diver. He first went to Columbia University, in New York City, on an athletic scholarship. He competed in the 1920 Olympics, and won a Bronze Medal. Louis remained in New York to go to Columbia Law School and become a lawyer. Then he returned to Oregon, where his family was living. Louis married Jessie May Paul (1906-unknown). They had no children. Louis James Balbach died in 1942, probably in Portland, Oregon. His wife Jessie May (Paul) Balbach remarried.

BURIAL: Louis was cremated and his remains stored in a niche. According to family history, when his mother Nettie Viola (Bonar) {1. Balbach} {2. Shepardson} Kramer died, her cremated remains were to be placed in the same niche as her son Louis. An Obituary listed the place of Nettie's innurement as Chapel of the Pines.
