Salvatore P. Alba, 67, of New Springville, a creative director, died Monday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan.

Born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, he graduated from New Utrecht High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the 1960s. He moved to New Springville in 1971.

He earned a bachelor's degree at the School of Visual Arts, Manhattan, prior to launching a career in advertising. He was the creative director and vice president at the Manhattan firms of Cunningham & Walsh, and DFS/Wegener Agricultural Group. He was a basketball coach for the CYO at St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Richmond.

"Sal was often referred to as the salt of the earth and his children were greatly inspired by their father's values and work ethic," said his wife of forty-three years, the former Claudia Comito.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, and tending to his huge fishpond. He also enjoyed trips to his country house in upstate Eldred.

In addition to his wife, Claudia, surviving are three sons, Michael, Salvatore Jr., and David; a sister, Maria; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on Saturday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church.
