George Abbott was at one time the proprieter of the Troy Whig. He learned the printer's trade at St. Johnsbury, VT and came to Troy, NY at an early age. He became a compositor at the Whig and advanced step by step until he was the sole proprietor of the paper. He was of spotless integrity, honorable in his dealings and a thorough business man. He left a wife (Catharine Abbott nee Cole) and a daughter, Frances M. Abbott Seitz.
