Purl Gordon Adams Jr.
A very special person in Okaloosa County has passed on to Heaven to join his precious father, lawyer Purl G. Adams, and his mother who passed on when he was an infant. That person is Purl Gordon Adams Jr.
Purl was an asset to his father, his family, his friends and all who knew him. His favorite memory was preaching and praying for others in his home, and in Sister Turners Chapel in Crestview years ago. As a young man, Purl wanted to join the Marines with several of his good buddies, but dear Dad would not give his consent. So Purl served God, Dad, his family and friends.
Really, Purl was a jack of all trades. His father tried to teach him everything that was important in life. As long as his father lived, Purl was his helper, constructing and repairing his buildings in Crestview, taking care of the cattle business and keeping up the fences and pastures. Later, he was appointed justice of the peace in our county and did a great job. His father loved politics, so Purl ran for county judge. He also operated the Phillips 66 Service Station in Crestview.
Purl worked hard at helping to build our community and make it a better place to live. Among the projects that Purl and his precious sons worked on are Bob Hope Village, Barton's Homes, A.E. New Construction, area schools and churches and other projects too numerous to mention. But Purl developed several ailments that forced him to slow down and sit back to rest. In his later years, he enjoyed his life at his wonderful, Godly home that his dear father helped him build during the '60s, with his loving family always respecting him and helping him in every way.
Purl is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Sue Taylor Adams, with whom he shared a beautiful and Godly life for 55 years. When they married in 1955, he told her that not only would she have to be his wife, friend and lover, but his mother (since Purl's own mother passed away in his infancy) and sister he never had as well. Barbara, with God's help, filled all those shoes. Purl and Barbara had a beautiful family together, raising their children God first, and teaching them to focus on the truly important things in life.
This wonderful family is, as born: Debra Jane Adams Haas Barrow and children Justin, Christin and Chelsea; Donna Elizabeth Adams Baggett Austin, children, Leslie, Leann and Everett and husband Dale; Purl Gordon Adams III, children Casey and Purl IV and wife Patti; Robert Paul Adams, children Evan Paul II and Morgan and wife Melissa; Phillip Lee Adams, children Courtney Elizabeth and Phillip II and wife Michelle. Purl is also survived by numerous grands and great-grands and other dear relatives and friends he loved so much. Life will be hard without this very special person around.
A time of visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at the chapel of Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Purl's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in Crestview, with Pastor Bruce Sheffield and the Rev. Donnie Cadenhead officiating. Burial will follow at Liveoak Park Memorial Cemetery.
Arrangements are entrusted to Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home in Crestview. A guest book and condolences are available online at www.whitehurstpowellfuneralhome.com .
