FAIRMONT — John S. Ammons, 93, of Route 2, Rivesville, died early Monday morning (May 23, 2011) in the Arbors at Fairmont.

He was born Aug. 7, 1917, in Marion County, son of the late William Bert and Goldie Mae "Walker" Ammons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary May Ammons, in 1998.

Mr. Ammons was in the U.S. Army, with four years of service, during World War II. He served in the European Theater. He was a retired coal miner from Eastern Gas and Fuel of Grant Town with 50 years of service. He was a 75-year member of the UMWA. Mr. Ammons earlier enjoyed farming and raising cattle.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley "Bill" Ammons, James Thurrel Ammons and Charles Ammons; and two sisters, Lelia Bowers and Margaret Boggs.

Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, DeGarmo Chapel, Jasper Street, Rivesville, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Stanley Merrifield officiating. Burial will follow in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Morgantown.
