Obituary from the Clarksburg Exponent Telegram Saturday January 19, 2013: Mr. Philip C. Alfred, 95 years of age, of Bridgeport, WV, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 17, 2013. He was born September 28, 1917, at Weston, WV, a son of the late Perry G. and Lillian Springston Alfred. He was married to his love, F. Lois Alfred, on May 4, 1943, who preceded him in death on April 6, 2012. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert E.L. Alfred, Thomas Jefferson Alfred and Richard Bland Alfred, and his sisters, Mary Helen Alfred and Lillian Frances Alfred. He was the last surviving member of his family. He was also preceded in death by his beloved son-in-law, George L. Cleghorn. Philip is survived by a daughter, Nancy Alfred Cleghorn; two sons, Philip C. (Charles) Alfred Jr. and his wife Norma, Tim Alfred and wife Barbara; dearly loved grandchildren, Thomas P. Cleghorn and wife Michelle and children Lindsay and Trey of Greensboro, NC, Chris Cleghorn and wife Amy and children Jared and Alyssa of Bridgeport, WV, Philip Cleghorn and wife Nicole and children A.J. and Jack of Spring, TX, Casey Alfred and wife Tracy and children Kaylee, Victoria and Joseph of Jane Lew, WV, Heather Kelly and husband Luke and children Taylor and Emily of Wellsville, NY, Michael Alfred and wife Alicia and children Grant, Carter and Luke of Colchester, CT, and Matthew Alfred and wife Kristen and baby son of Springfield, VA. Also, surviving are his beloved sister-in-law, Reta Hinzman Bailey of North Ridgeville, OH, and many beloved nephews and nieces and great-nephews and nieces. Philip graduated from Weston High School. In 1939, he graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. After the war, he started at what was then Hope Natural Gas Co. and later becoming Consolidated Natural Gas Co. and continued there for 42 years as a supervisor of property accounting. His Lord and his family were the reason for his life. He prayed daily for his family and always asked what they were doing and how they were. He served the Lord in many ways throughout his life at both Clarksburg Baptist Church and Simpson Creek Baptist Church, working as Sunday school superintendent, usher and deacon, as well as many other charitable works throughout the community. His last months were spent with his family and extended family at Golden Harvest/Visiting Angels, where he was loved and cared for by those who attended there. A very special thank you goes to his dear friend, Kathy Costello, who became like a second daughter to him after the loss of his wife. Friends will be received at the Ford Funeral Home, 215 East Main Street, Bridgeport, WV, on Monday from 6-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. The funeral service will be celebrated in the funeral home on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Dr. C. Michael Hopkins presiding. The interment will follow in the Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport, WV. The West Virginia Army Honor Guard and the Harrison County Honor Guard will provide military rites at graveside.
