William "Bill" Allender, 85, of Bridgeport, passed away Monday afternoon, December 6, 2010, at his residence. He was born on February 4, 1925, in Pierce, a son of the late Howard Wesley and Ada Louise Sheets Allender.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Shirley Jones Allender, whom he married on October 19, 1946.

He is also survived by his extended family, Paula and Donnie Bramer and their children Dak Bramer and Allee Johnson and her husband Patrick and their son Cobey; Mary Rawlinitis, all of Bridgeport. His special caregiver, Marty Wiseman of North View, who gave great care to Bill.

He was the last remaining member of his family, having been preceded in death by his son, William E. Allender, Jr.; a brother, Pete Allender; and two sisters, Jean Faherty and Lona Williams.

Bill was a graduate of Thomas High School and proudly served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a police officer for the City of Bridgeport for 25 years, retiring in 1985 as a Captain, and had previously served as the Chief of Police.

He loved his family and he had a gentle soul especially when it came to the kids, he was often referred to as their "Teddybear." He also enjoyed woodworking and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to the Bridgeport EMS for all of their help and support.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Thursday from 2 – 8 p.m., where services will be held on Friday, December 10, 2010, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Thomas P. Horne presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.
