David Van Pelt Acaster, 84, of Saddle River, N.J., died April 23, 2007.

Born April 19, 1923, in Portsmouth, N.H., he attended Michael House School in Natal, South Africa, before graduating from Lawrenceville School and Princeton University with a degree in chemical engineering. During World War II, he served in the Marine Corps, Pacific Theatre and China. He held manufacturing management positions in the U.S. and Canada with the former American Cyanamid Co. for 42 years. Upon his retirement, he became a very active scuba diver, traveling worldwide with his wife to exotic locations. His various volunteer works included District Committee Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America, Library Board, United Way, Church Warden in Canada and fund raising for Princeton University. He was a Saddle River resident for 40 years and a member of Church Episcopal Church in Ridgewood.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Jane Miller of Vienna; his son, Ben and daughter-in-law, Sharon of Allendale, N.J.; his daughter, Ceecy and son-in-law, Jack Ringwood of Moorestown N.J.; a niece, Terry Cauthorn of Vienna; a brother, Van Acaster of Tucson, Ariz.; and five grandchildren, Ashley and Allie Acaster and David, Ned and Ben Ringwood.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Christ Church, Cottage Place, Ridgewood, N.J. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the C.C.Van Emburgh Funeral Home, 306 E. Ridgewood Ave., Ridgewood, NJ 07450. (www.vanemburgh.com).
