She was born on Oct. 17, 1899, to Charles and Emma (Stoeker) Merchant in Arcadia. She attended McCarthy School and then attended Superior Business School. She returned to Shell Lake and worked at the Lumberman’s Bank of Shell Lake.
On June 20, 1920, she married Lester Allen. They resided in Shell Lake.
Mabel was a member of Shell Lake United Methodist Church and was named Shell Lake Citizen of the Year in 1970. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Shell Lake Hospital Auxiliary. Mabel was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Shell Lake election board.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1943, two daughters, one grandson, one great-granddaughter, three brothers, and one sister.
Survivors include one daughter, Doris (Clint) DesJardins of Shell Lake; one son, Edwin (JoAnn) of Shell Lake; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, at Shell Lake United Methodist Church. Rev. Charles Wendt and Dr. Ray Heilborn will officiate. Burial will be in Shell Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Pockat Funeral Home in Shell Lake and for an hour before the service on Thursday.
Pall bearers will be Eric, Matthew, and Jason Penning and Ryan, Alex, and Jacob Pederson.
