Sterling was a restless settler of the west, starting out in New York and stopping in MO, IA, and finally in KS. He married twice, and first wife Mary Belden Lincoln (third cousin of the president) is buried here with him according to Judy Gilbert (headstones have been removed). With her he had 10 children. With his second wife Mary Osborne he had 8 more, the last being born after his death. He served for the Union during the Civil War. His father was Joseph Gillet of Colchester, CT and Ira, Cayuga, NY, and his mother was Lydia "Belinda" Berry. His 4th great grandfather was Jonathan Gillett, who came to British North America in 1630 and founded Windsor, CT
Sterling's burial in this cemetery is based on a posting from Judy Gilbert in 2002: "He died Feb. 10, 1896, and was buried next to his first wife in Alton Grove Cemetery, 5 mi. southeast of Caldwell." The following obit contradicts this and says he's in the Caldwell Cemetery. Note also that his age in the article is 61, not 65:

GILLETT, J. S.
J. S. Gillett, an old solder living east of the city, died Monday morning of a complication of diseases contracted while in the union army. Services were held over the remains Tuesday at 10 o'clock a.m., in the country and interment was made in Caldwell Cemetery. The deceased was a good Christian gentleman and leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. His age was 61 years.
