Funeral services for John M. Briggs. 77, who died Thursday morning at Blackwell General Hospital, OK will be conducted 2:30 p.m., Sat. at the Porter Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Rome County Kans Cemetery.
Mr. Briggs, who resided at 516 South B. and the Blackwell Nursing Home, was born and reared in Blackwell. He was born Sept 19, 1896 in Blackwell, the son of Moses and Mattie Briggs. He attended the Blackwell schools. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, American Legion, and VFW and the top of Oklahoma Historical Society.
He was employed at the Hazel-Atlas Glass Co.before it was destroyed and then worked in the Parks Dept. for the City of Blackwell, and was well-known as a zookeeper for Monkey Island in Blackwell.
He is survived by two half-sisters: Mrs. Minnie Walker of Nashville, Tenn, and Mrs. Susie Stallsworth of Thousand Oaks, Calif; a number nieces and nephews, including Mrs, Max Payne and Mrs. Harold Weigle both of Blackwell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Webster in 1958,and four sisters. Rev. James Bell, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Blackwell, OK officiated. Casketbearers were Preston Horstman, Ancel James, John Holden, Pete Magers, John Stauffacher and Robert Heatly.
His obituary mentions VFW so he probably was a veteran of World War I--He probably would have been 22 years old when USA entered World War I.
