William N. "Bill" Akers, 87, retired farmer and cattleman, died March 7, 2009. He was born in 1921 in Wellington, Kansas to William and Leah Alexander Akers. He was raised in the Corbin area and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1939. He attended Kansas State University.

Bill served in the Navy during WW II from July 1942 until December 1945. He was stationed in Tunisia, Africa and Italy. Following his discharge he returned to the Corbin community.

On February 9, 1947 he married Lois Arlene Youree. They made a home in the Corbin community for 62 years where they raised their three children, Steve, Jan, and Stan.

Bill was an active farmer and cattleman his whole life. He belonged to the Corbin United Methodist Church and was active in the American Legion. Bill will be missed for his quiet acts of kindness and generosity.

He leaves his wife, Lois of the home; son, Steve Akers and wife Sharon of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Jan Akers Thompson and husband Rick of Nevada, Missouri; son, Stan Akers and Mandy Struble of Caldwell, Kansas; grandchildren, Trent Thompson of Roeland Park, Kansas; Courtney and Shane Paul of Peculiar, Missouri; Carey and Andrew Hanzlicek of Manhattan, Kansas; Matt and Jenny Thompson of Leawood, Kansas; Megan Akers of Austin, Texas; Ivy and Aaron Arnett of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Lindsey Thompson of Overland Park, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Kinsley Paul and William Hanzlicek; other survivors include sister-in-law, Colleen and Don Balaban of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends may call at the mortuary from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 9, 2009.

A memorial has been established with the United Methodist Church in Corbin.

Funeral services for Bill will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the United Methodist Church, Corbin, Kansas.

Interment will be in the Corzine Cemetery, Corbin, Kansas.
