President of the Union Pacific Railroad. Stoddard started his railroad career as a shop apprentice on St. Louis San Francisco (Frisco Lines) in 1915. He joined Union Pacific in 1916 as a station helper.

His 4000-class locomotives were called 'The Big Boys.'
