US Congressman. Born a Native American Cherokee Indian, he graduated from Worcester Academy, attended Drury College in Springfield, Missouri and was appointed revenue collector for the Delaware District of the Cherokee Nation, in 1891. He later served as the Cherokee Nation Town site commissioner in 1895, plus was a prominent farmer, businessman, oil producer and drilled the Cherokee Nation's first producing oil well on his allotment near Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He organized the Indian Telephone Company in Vinita, for long distance service, in 1890 and he served as deputy clerk of the United States court for the northern district of the Indian Territory, (1900-07). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1907, practiced law in Vinita, Indian Territory and with Oklahoma statehood, was a member of the first Board of Public Affairs for the State of Oklahoma (1909-10). He also was named to the first Board of Public Affairs, as secretary secured Eastern State Hospital for Vinita, was the first Indian to meet with President William McKinley and was influential in allotment of Indian lands in Oklahoma. In 1917, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-fifth Congress, serving until 1919 and was reelected to the Sixty-seventh Congress, serving (1921-23). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, until his death at age 81.
