Last Chief of Cherokee Nation. He served as the last principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. His entire self-government offices and authority were abolished by order of the U.S. Federal government with the establishment of the State of Oklahoma in 1907. He remained as principal chief, but with greatly diminished powers, performing largely ceremonial functions for the tribe until his death. He served in the Civil War enlisting at the age of 14 in lst regiment, Cherokee Volunteers (Co.E.) of the Confederate Army. He later farmed near Skiatook, Oklahoma and pursued an active political career in the Cherokee Congress.
