United States Army General. He attended Harvard University, transferred to West Point, and graduated in 1945. He served during Japan's post-World War II occupation, and was a company commander with the 7th Infantry Division during the Korean War. In the mid-1950s he served at the Pentagon and completed the Command and General Staff College. He earned a Master's degree in international relations from Georgetown University in 1958 and graduated from the National War College in 1963. He received a Master of Business Administration degree from George Washington University in 1965. Casey then served in Europe with 1st Battalion, 39th Infantry and 3rd Brigade, 8th Infantry Division. In 1966 and 1967 he served in Vietnam as Chief of Staff of 1st Cavalry Division and Commander of the division's 2nd Brigade. After commanding the Combat Arms Group at the Combat Developments Command, he returned to Vietnam as Deputy Commander and then Commander of the 1st Cavalry Division. He was killed when his helicopter crashed while flying to visit wounded troops. His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star (3), Legion of Merit (2), Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart (2), Air Medal (8), Army Commendation Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.
