Medical Figure. She was an American educated doctor who was the only doctor for five million Chinese rural Chinese in the early part of the century. Born in China, she was sent to the U.S. to study medicine. After getting her medical degree, she returned to China and became a missionary/doctor. She helped organize the first Red Cross in China, and founded the Chinese Women's Christian Temperance Union. She founded a modern nursing school in China, but tangled with nationalist authorities over their insisance that she register her school and submit her students to governmental regulation and proganda. She was successful in her resistance. She returned to the U.S. just prior to the Communist takeover of her country. She continued to be active in the Bethel Mission of China until her death in Pasadena.
