US Senator. Born to Dr. John Clarke and his first wife Amy Hopkins. He moved to Rhode Island where he studied under a private tutor and graduated from Brown University in 1809. In 1812 he was admitted to the Rhode Island bar and opened a practice in Providence. He became the clerk for the Providence County Supreme Count in 1813. He was also owned a distillery in Cranston. In 1824 he changed to the manufacturing of cotton in several areas within Rhode Island. He became a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1836 and served until 1842. He served again in 1845 till 1847 when he was elected to the US Senate as a Whig, serving alongside Albert Collins Greene. Upon completion of his term he returned to Rhode Island and resumed his previous manufacturing pursuits. He died at the age of 81.
