Antarctica Explorer. From 1928 to 1930, he served as Admiral Richard E. Byrd's second in command on his first trip to Antarctica. In 1930, he claimed part of Antarctica for America, but he later worked to make the continent international territory. He served as the president of Carleton College in Minnesota from 1945-1962 and helped turn it into a liberal arts college.
