U.S. Congressman. He was a successful contractor and builder in New York City, a member of the board of aldermen of New York City, (1918-23), New York State tax appraiser, (1923-29) and Chamberlain of New York City, (1929-33). In 1935, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth Congress and to the next fourteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1965. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his previous business interests until his death at age 76.
