College Swimming and Diving Coach. He served in the United States Army from October 4, 1918 to December 20, 1918. In 1927 he graduated from Ohio State University and earned his Masters from Columbia in 1928. In 1931 he returned to Ohio State as the first swimming and diving coach, a position he would hold until 1962. In 1943 he coached OSU to its first NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship. Then led the Buckeyes to NCAA Championships in 1945, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1956, and 1962. He led the Buckeyes to 12 Big Ten Championships, and had 12 undefeated seasons. In 1948 and 1952 he coached the United States Olympic Diving Team. In 1951 he was also the coach of the United States Pan American Swimming and Diving Team. In 1966 he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
