US Senator. He was a Democrat who was appointed as a Senator from California to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of William Gibbs McAdoo. He served for only two months, from November 1938 to January 1939. Before and after his senatorial foray, he was a newspaper editor and publisher in Santa Barbara, California. He also served on the board of regents of the University of California.
