Olympic Medal Swimmer. Jeanette Campbell received world-wide recognition as an award-winning South American swimmer in an era when South American women's sports were in infancy. She was the first Argentine to win a medal at the Olympic Games. The first South American Swimming Championships were held in 1935 in Brazil. She won the 100-meter freestyle as she did in Uruguay in 1937; Peru in 1938; and Ecuador in 1939. Her greatest achievement was taking the silver medal in the 100- meter freestyle at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. She finished second behind Holland's Hendrika Mastenbroek, who swept all the women's freestyle events. She married Roberto Peper, a swimmer who competed in 1932 Olympic games. The couple had two daughters and a son. In 1964 at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, she carried the Argentinean flag in the opening ceremony.
