Religious Figure. She is believed by Christianity to be the Mother of Jesus of Nazareth (the Christian Messiah). It is widely accepted that she was born to Joachim and Anna. Joachim was of the house of David and Anna was of the house of Aaron. There is some scholarly debate regarding her father due to the genealogies found in Matthew 1:17 and Luke 3:23-38. She was betrothed and later married to Joseph who was a carpenter. Mary took part in the Incarnation and Redemption by her Divine Motherhood and her sorrows on Calvary. On October 11, 1954, Pope Pius XII instituted the Feast of Mary in the liturgical calendar of the Church. According to Catholic belief, Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven. Therefore, there is no grave or tomb. The doctrine of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was formally defined and proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1950. Her date of death is unknown and she is believed to be buried in Gethsemane.
