Poet. He was a Lithuanian poet who composed the Lithuanian national anthem. He published two collections of songs: "Kanklës" and "Lietuviðkos dainos," and was the first to harmonize Lithuanian folk songs. He also composed other music such as polkas, waltzes, and mazurkas. In 1898 he published the music and the lyrics of what was to become the Lithuanian National Anthem, then titled "Tautos giesmë." He died of tuberculosis at age 40. The second half of "Tautiška giesmė" was engraved on his gravestone. On July 5, 2009, a statue of Vincas Kudirka was unveiled on one of the main streets of the capital city of Vilnius.
