At age ten he was learning woodblock carving and was soon apprenticed to a book-lending shop, and continued his study of painting and drawing from the picture books he found in the shop. He became an apprenticeship at a woodcut workshop at the age of fourteen. At the age of eighteen he became a pupil of Katsukawa Shunsho and took the name of Katsukawa Shunro. He was connected to the art school of Katsukawa Shunsho for fourteen years. During the first few years of his career he created over 30,000 prints, with the series "36 Views of Mt. Fuji" among his best known prints. From 1814 onward he published a series of fifteen Manga sketchbooks. He signed one of his last works as "The Art-Crazy Old Man". In his 89 years, Hokusai changed his name some thirty times and lived in at least ninety homes.
