Civil War Union Army Officer. He gained notoriety when he served as the guard for Dr. Samuel Mudd, one of the Lincoln Assassination Conspirators. He accompanied Dr. Mudd to a Military prison in Florida, where Mudd confessed he knew John Wilkes Booth. George Dutton admitted this in a sworn statement. He served from June 11, 1861 to March 29, 1863 as Captain and Major of the 9th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, which was known as "Stoughton's Irish Brigade". He served later from July 20, 1863 to July 6, 1866 with Co. C. 10th Veterans Relief Corps.
