Politician and Brigadier General. Governor Leland Stanford appointed Romualdo Pacheco as a brigadier general commanding the First Brigade of California's Native Cavalry during the Civil War. In June 1871 Pacheco received the Republican Party nomination for Lt. Governor of California; and in 1875, when Governor Newton Booth was elected to the U.S. Senate, Pacheco became Governor of California. His stay in the Governor's office was relatively short and, in November 1876, Romualdo ran for and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to serve in the 45th Congress (1877-1878), winning by a margin of one vote. He later served in the 46th and 47th Congresses.
