Author. She was born at Alresford, Hampshire, England on December 16th 1787. Wrote Our Village which was a series of sketches of village scenes and characters. Also wrote other poetry and books and became close friends with Jane Austen. She was very devoted to her fathers needs but he had a serious gambling problem and they lived in poverty for many years. After her father passed away she moved to a cottage at Swallowfield, near Reading, where she died on January 10th 1855.

Gravesite Details

The novelist Mary Russell Mitford (1787-1855) is buried in All Saints' churchyard, where a tall, plain stone cross, erected by public subscription northeast of the church, marks her grave.
