French Politician and Historian. He was a socialist who favored reforms and called for the creation of cooperatives to guarantee employment for the urban poor. The son of a political office holder under Joseph Bonaparte during his reign as King of Spain, he studied law in Paris, France, and founded the "Revue du progres" from which he published his study "L'Organisation du travail" in 1839, in which he attributed all the evils that afflict society to the pressure of competition, whereby the weaker are driven to the wall. He demanded the equalization of wages, and the merging of personal interests in the common good. In 1847 he published the two first volumes of his "Historie de la Revolution Francaise", interrupted by the Revolution of 1848, when he became a member of the provisional government. When his workshop program failed, he was blamed and forced to leave France. He fled to England where he made use of the unique collection of materials for the revolutionary period preserved at the British Museum to complete his "Historie de la Revolution Francaise" (12 volumes, (1847 to 1862). He remained in exile until the fall of the Second Empire in September 1870 and served as a private in the National Guard. In February 1871 he was elected a member of the National Assembly. His last act was a proposal to give amnesty to the French Communards which was approved. In failing health during his final years, he died at the age of 71 and was given as state funeral.
