Robert Lee Howsam
Birth: Feb. 28, 1918
Death: Feb. 19, 2008
Sun City
Maricopa County
Arizona, USA

Sports Executive. Former Cincinnati Reds General Manager and co-founder of the Denver Broncos. In 1959 he played a key role in the creation of the AFL (the American Football League) which would later merge with the NFL. Howsam oversaw the Cincinnati Reds from 1967 to 1977 and made key acquisitions which took an already talented team to the championship level. He hired Sparky Anderson as manager in 1970, made trades that brought All Stars and Hall of Famer's Joe Morgan and George Foster, and oversaw the "Big Red Machine" as they were known when they drafted youngsters such as Ken Griffey and Dave Concepción. Howsam died at his Sun City, Arizona home of heart problems. (bio by: John Sheets)
