US Congressman. Born in Darby, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, his family moved to Mercer, Pennsylvania, where he attended private schools and later a boarding school in preparation for a career in law. Following his study of law he was admitted to the Mercer County bar in August 1822and became involved in Whig politics. In a special election in 1836 he was elected to represent Pennsylvania's 24th District in the United States House of Representatives following the resignation of his predecessor. He served from December, 1836 to March 1837 and was not a candidate for election to a regular term. He resumed the practice of law but did return to politics serving in the Pennsylvania State Senate and as President Judge of the Dauphin-Lebanon County judicial district.
