Civil War Union Army Officer. Cpming to Albion from New York with his wife Lydia Ferris in 1855, he served during the Civil War first as Captain and commander of Company D, 12th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. It was his company of advance scouts under his command that fired the first shots that brought on the Battle of Shiloh of April 6, 1862. He was also involved in other battles, including the siege of Vicksburg in June and July of 1863, and the siege of Little Rock in August and September of 1863. For bravery and faithfulness of duty, he was promoted to the rank of Major, and later to Lieutenant Colonel. After the War he was Albion's postmaster from 1867 to 1875, and was a member of the school board from 1867 to 1873. He was commander of the local Grand Army of the Republic post at the time of his death in 1904.
