Healthcare Professional. On August 1, 1879, she received her nursing diploma, becoming the first African-American graduate nurse. In 1896, she became one of the first African-American members of the predominantly white American Nurses Association. She also participated in the campaign for women suffrage and in 1921, was one of the first women in line to vote after ratification of the nineteenth amendment. In 1923, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Mahoney was inducted into the Nursing Hall of Fame in 1976 and inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993.
