Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in Valencia, he studied at the local seminary and was ordained priest there in 1888. Obtaining doctorates in theology and Canon Law, he lectured at the seminaries of Valencia and Segovia, where he also served among others at Vicar General of the diocese. Appointed Apostolic Administrator of Solsona, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Ermopoli Maggiore on February 2, 1902. Transferred to the see of Urgel in 1906, which office gave him the dignity of co-prince of Andorra, he wrote the text of the Principality's national anthem. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Burgos on January 7, 1919, Pope Benedict XV created him Cardinal with the title of Santa Maria in Aracoeli in 1921. He received the red biretta from King Alfonso XIII in the chapel of the Royal Palace of Madrid along with two other ecclesiastics. The Cardinal passed away following a lenghty illness brought on by diabetes in Madrid, and in accordance with his personal wishes, was interred in the Basilica of the Virgen de los Desamparados in his native Valencia, making him the first person to be buried in this popular Marian sanctuary.
