Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a staunch Garibaldian who moved to Rome in order to avoid arrest from the Austrians and eventually died there, Enrico Dante entered the Almo Collegio Capranica in 1901, later pursuing his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Studium of the Sacred Roman Rota, earning doctorates in philosophy, theology, canon and civil laws and the diploma of an advocate of the Rota. Ordained priest in July 1910, Dante lectured philosophy at the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum De Propaganda Fide from 1911 until 1928, and successively theology from 1928 till 1947. Becoming a member of the College of Pontifical Ceremonies in March 1914, his was one of the most familiar faces of all members of the Roman Curia, having assisted six Popes in a fifty year span. Declining an offer from Pope Pius XI to reestablish the Apostolic Nunciature in France for the sake of his two sisters whom he did not wish to leave behind in Rome, Dante went on to serve as adjunct of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, becoming its pro-secretary in 1959 and secretary the following year. Appointed prefect of Pontifical Ceremonies in 1947, in private life Dante was an avid sportsman who helped launching the Rome soccer team and loved mountaineering. Dean of the chapter of the church of Santa Maria in Montesanto located at Piazza del Popolo, for forty years he heard confessions at the Sacro Cuore al Suffragio church in Rome. Elected archbishop of the titular see of Carpasia in August 1962, he received his episcopal consecration from Pope John XXIII at the Patriarchal Lateran basilica the following September along with seven other prelates. In the consistory of February 22, 1965, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal deacon of Sant'Agata dei Goti. Dante passed away of cancer in a Roman hospital shortly after receiving a visit from the named Pope Paul and was laid to rest in his titular church.
