Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Milan, Efrem Leone Pio Forni received his education at the University of Milan, the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. Ordained priest in July 1913, he formed part of the teaching staff of the archiepiscopal college of Cantù and of the college of d'Arona, Milan until 1921, when he was named secretary to the apostolic nunciature in Portugal, of which he became auditor in 1926. Auditor to the nunciature in France between 1928 and 1937, in November that year he was appointed apostolic nuncio in Ecuador, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Darni on February 20 of the following year. Named nuncio in Belgium and internuncio in Luxemburg on November 9, 1953, Pope John XXIII created him cardinal priest with the title of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in the consistory of March 19, 1962. The Cardinal spent his last years in Rome, passing away there at the Policlino Gemelli following a short illness. In accordance with his wishes, his body was transferred to Gallarate and interred there in the church of Saint Francis, in a specially constructed sarcophagus beside the main altar. This church was particularly dear to the late Cardinal, who often used to recall that he received the gift of his vocation to the priesthood in that church.
