Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Terán, José María Cos y Macho received his first education under the Jesuits in Segura and later at the seminary of Monte Corbán and the University of Salamanca, earning a doctorate in theology. Ordained priest in September 1862, he lectured for a brief period at the Conciliar Seminary of Santander. Member of the cathedral chapters of Córdoba and Oviedo, he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Mondoñedo in 1886, receiving his episcopal consecration on September 12 that year. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, on February 14, 1889, two years later he was named senator of the Spanish Kingdom, a position which he held until his death. Transferred to the diocese of Madrid-Alcalá with the personal title of archbishop on June 11, 1892, he was transferred once more, this time to the metropolitan see of Valladolid on April 18, 1901. Created cardinal priest with the title of Santa Maria del Popolo by Pope Pius X in the consistory of November 27, 1911, to this day he remains the only Valladolid ordinary to receive the red hat. Passing away of bronchial pneumonia, he was laid to rest in the cathedral of the last archdiocese he led.
