Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Alberto di Jorio received his education at the Pontifical Roman Seminary and the Studium of the Sacred Roman Rota. Ordained priest in April 1908, he briefly lectured at the interdiocesan seminary of Perugia until 1910, when he was named official of the vicariate of Rome, a position which he held until 1918 he was appointed secretary of the Institute for Works of Religion, becoming its president in 1922, an office which he held until 1958. Secretary of the Cardinalitial Commission for the Special Administration of the Holy See between 1940 and 1947, auditor general of the Apostolic Chamber and secretary of the Sacred College of Cardinals from 1947 until 1958, di Jorio was named vicar of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica on January 24, 1947. Acting as secretary of the 1958 conclave, which elected John XXIII to the papacy, in his first consistory on December 15 that year, the Pope elevated him to the Sacred College of Cardinals with the title of Santa Pudenziana. Named pro-president of the Pontifical Commission for the State of Vatican City on August 14, 1961, di Jorio was elected archbishop of the titular see of Castra Nova, receiving his episcopal consecration from the named Pope John XXIII at the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica on April 19, 1962. Retiring from office in 1968 by the time of his death, which occurred inside his Roman residence, he was the oldest member of the Sacred College of Cardinals.
