Roman Catholic Cardinal. Treviso born Domenico Agostini entered the local seminary after receiving private tuition at his parents' residence, pursuing later his studies at the University of Padua earning doctorates in philosophy and law. Briefly interrupting his studies to join the citizens' militia during the war with Austria between 1848 and 1849, he successively concluded his studies for the priesthood, being ordained in March 1851. Coadjutor of the parish of San Stefano and member of the teaching staff of the seminary of his native city, he joined the Society of Jesus in 1857, but left two years later, rejoining the diocesan clergy of the diocese of Treviso. Appointed judge of the ecclesiastical tribunal, archpriest of the cathedral chapter, chancellor and pro-vicar general of the named diocese, in 1871 he was named bishop of Chioggia, receiving his episcopal consecration in Venice on December 17 that year. Promoted to the patriarchal see of Venice while retaining the administration of his see "ad beneplacitum Sanctis Sedis", on June 22, 1877, he entered the patriarchate by sea the following October. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of March 27, 1882, with the title of Sant'Eusebio, opting later for the title of Santa Maria della Pace in 1886. He died in office and was laid to rest on Venice's isle of the dead.
