Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a carpenter, Robert-Joseph Coffy was born in Le Biot. Ordained priest in Annecy in October 1944 upon concluding his studies at the Minor Seminary of Thonon and the Major Seminary of Annecy, he joined the teaching staff of the Minor Seminary of Thonon in 1948. Furthering his studies at the Catholic Faculty of Lyon, he successively joined the faculty of the Major Seminary of Annecy, eventually becoming its rector in 1952, an office which he held for four years. Honorary canon of the local cathedral chapter and member of the episcopal council, in the years which followed Coffy served furthermore as diocesan director of religious education and vicar general of the diocese between 1956 and 1967. Named bishop of the see of Gap, he received his episcopal consecration in Annecy on April 23, 1967. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Albi on June 15, 1974, he was transferred to the archdiocese of Marseille on April 13, 1985. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest with the title of San Luigi Maria Grignion de Montfort in the consistory of June 28, 1991. Retiring from the pastoral government of his see on April 22, 1995, he died of cancer less than three months later.
