Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Francesco Borgongini Duca received his education at the Pontifical Roman Seminary, earning doctorates in theology and canon law. Ordained priest in December 1906, he was appointed to the teaching staff of the Athenaeum of Pontifical Roman Seminary of Rome and of the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum De Propaganda Fide. Official of the Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary from 1909 until 1917, when he was named its secretary, he was successively appointed pro-secretary of the Sacred Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs on June 28, 1921 and secretary on October 14 of the following year. Member of the commission formed to negotiate the Lateran Pact, he was elected archbishop of the titular see of Eraclea di Europa, receiving his episcopal consecration on June 29 1929. Appointed apostolic nuncio in Italy on the following day, he was furthermore elected pontifical administrator of the Basilica of San Paolo fuori le Mura of Rome on April 1, 1933 and of the basilica of Our Lady of Loreto on March 25, 1934. Aged 68, he was created cardinal priest in the consistory of January 12, 1953, by Pope Pius XII with the title of Santa Maria in Vallicella. A hero of the Second World War who secretly provided help to Jews and allied prisoners of war, the Cardinal died of heart ailment after receiving the last rites in his apartment in the palace of the Holy Office. Originally buried in the chapel of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide at the Campo Verano Cemetery, at a later date his remains were transferred to the church of San Salvatore in Ossibus inside Vatican City.
