Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Poggio Garfagnana, Paolo Bertoli received his education at the Diocesan Seminary of Lucca, the Pontifical Roman Seminary, from where he obtained his doctorates in philosophy and theology and later at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum S. Apollinare, from where he earned a doctorate in utroque iure, in both canon and civil laws. Ordained priest on August 15, 1930 in Lucca, he was named attaché and auditor of the nunciature in Yugoslavia in 1933, receiving the title of privy chamberlain of His Holiness on January 16, 1934, being later reappointed again on March 3, 1939 by Pope Pius XII. Auditor of the apostolic nunciature in France between 1938 and 1942, he served as chargé d'affaires of the apostolic delegation in the Antilles from 1942 till 1946. Appointed domestic prelate of His Holiness on January 26, 1946, he acted as Papal representative to the International Conference to solve the problems caused by the Second World War in Berne, Switzerland, in 1946, and to the Red Cross Congresses in Copenhagen and Genève. Appointed chargé d'affaires of the nunciature in Czechoslovakia in 1949, he was unable to hold the post for political reasons. Elected archbishop of the titular see of Nicomedia on March 24, 1952 and appointed apostolic delegate in Turkey, he received his episcopal consecration on the following May 11 inside the church of Santa Maria in Campitelli in Rome, from Cardinal Eugène Tisserant, Bishop of the Suburbicarian See of Ostia and Porto e Santa Rufina and Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals. Named apostolic nuncio in Colombia on May 7, 1953, and successively in Lebanon on April 15, 1959, and later in France on April 16, 1960, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal deacon in the consistory of April 28, 1969 with the deaconry of San Girolamo della Carità, appointing him prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of the Saints on May 7. Resigning the prefecture on March 1, 1973, he opted for the order of cardinal priests and the title of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni on March 5, 1973. Named Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church on May 5, 1979 and bishop of the suburbicarian see of Frascati on the following June 30, he acted as Papal legate to the opening of the Holy Door at San Paolo fuori le mura's Basilica on December 24, 1983. Resigning the post of Camerlengo on March 25, 1985, the Cardinal spent his last years in Rome. In accordance with his wishes, his remains are found buried inside the cemetery of Poggio.
