Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Recife, Augusto Álvaro da Silva, entered seminary in Olinda and was ordained priest in March 1899. Master of ceremonies of the cathedral of Olinda, he was named privy chamberlain of His Holiness in 1908. At the early age of thirty five, da Silva was elected as the first bishop of the newly erected see of Floresta by Pope Pius X, receiving his episcopal consecration on October 22, 1911. Transferred to the diocese of Barra do Rio Grande on June 25, 1915, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of São Salvador da Bahia on December 17, 1924, taking possession on May 20 of the following year. Pope Pius XII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of January 12, 1953, with the title of Sant'Angelo in Pescheria. The Cardinal died while still in office venerable age of ninety two, after leading the archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia for forty three.
